There are many challenges facing all public schools in New Jersey. Here at Watchung Hills Regional, we are working hard in determining the next level of work in expanding opportunities to increase the academic achievement of ALL students. This is no easy task in a high performing school district. We acknowledge that it is also becoming increasingly difficult to strike a balance between adhering to the multitude of recently introduced federal and state mandates while continuing to enhance the rigorous and varied program of study we are known for at Watchung Hills.
Toward that end, we engaged in a strategic planning process in 2015 which resulted in our comprehensive 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. The plan includes three overarching goals that arose from rich conversations with all stakeholder groups - students, staff, parents, and community members. These goals are to:
- Create and expand programs and services that enhance the social and emotional wellness of all students within a compassionate learning community.
- Build and strengthen support structures that engage students in developing their individual potential, enable students to experience success in high school, and empower students to plan and prepare well for post-secondary learning.
- Integrate creative, innovative, and interdisciplinary learning throughout the district to empower and inspire students to succeed in a changing global community.
Our staff continues to have focused conversations around promoting social and emotional wellness, planning for post-secondary learning, and engaging students in authentic learning experiences across all disciplines. Furthermore, our curricular work does not only encompass a 9-12 scope. Articulation with our sending districts through collaboration on curriculum development and the sharing and analysis of student performance data will strengthen our program and expand our capacity to effectively meet student needs.
Our highly collaborative, dedicated staff, exceptionally talented students, and supportive, engaged community are essential components as we work to continually enhance achievement of ALL Watchung Hills students. I am grateful for all those involved in the development of this plan and look forward to broadening everyone’s involvement in helping shape the future of the Watchung Hills Regional High School District.
