The Gender and Sexuality Association (formerly the Gay Straight Alliance) is a student club that celebrates diversity and raises awareness around issues of sexual orientation and gender identity. We seek to help create a school environment free from harassment, intimidation and bullying based on perceived differences. We welcome students of all identities and orientations and we offer a safe space where students are free to be themselves.
Starting in the October the Week of Respect, we asked students, teachers and staff to pose for a photo of themselves holding a white board on which they wrote their own personal message about diversity and respect. These photos were then edited and produced as banners which were hung throughout the school. The banners produced a great deal of positive feedback from not only members of our school community, but visitors as well. They were a very visible sign of the commitment of WH to diversity and respect.
Creating Safe Spaces for Diversity: (Trans)gender Issues in Public Education
This evening panel discussion on April 2, 2014 was a first-of-its-kind event for a public school in New Jersey. The event was open to the entire community, and involved 5 guest panelists speaking of their experiences as trans students in public schools. The discussion generated a great deal of interest and helped raise awareness of issues we still need to work on to make public schools truly inclusive.
