Mission:
The purpose of the Linguistics Club is to study the science of language, to investigate how people acquire their knowledge about language, how this knowledge interacts with other cognitive processes, how it varies across speakers and geographic regions, and how to model this knowledge computationally. The Linguistics Club will aim to help its members gain an understanding of the structure of language in general and of particular languages, including English, how languages vary and how language influences the way in which we interact with each other and think about the world. The Linguistics Club will serve the community. For example, the Linguistics Club may endeavor to work with children in the local community and study the way children acquire language and the unconscious knowledge that humans have about language. The Linguistics Club will also endeavor to create a study group for those students in the community interested in taking the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO), invitational round, offered in January of each calendar year, and to make Watchung Hills Regional High School an authorized high school site for the exam.
