The Watchung Hills Regional High School Mathematics Department is committed to developing critical and creative thinkers who collaborate and communicate effectively to solve academic and real-world problems. Proficiency in mathematical studies is key to a successful career in many fields such as science and business. The members of the mathematics department believe that all students can succeed in mathematical studies through the combined efforts of teacher, student, and parent in a wide variety of math courses: algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. We offer courses in Advanced Placement Calculus AB, BC, Computer Science A, Computer Science Principles and Statistics.
The teachers of the department use a wide variety of technological and pedagogical tools including Texas Instrument Calculator Technology, Smartboards, mathematical based software and guided/independent practice to maximize student achievement. The curriculum of the mathematics department has roots in the New Jersey State Learning Standards in Mathematics and their overarching themes: Equity, Curriculum, Teaching, Learning, Assessment and Technology.
Standards are based on the following conceptual concepts (adopted June 2020)
1. Number and Quantity
2. Algebra
3. Functions
4. Modeling
5. Geometry
6. Statistics and Probability
High School students are currently required test via the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments in Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry-depending on mathematics class enrollment. All 11th graders must test via the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment. These assessments are rooted in the NJLS in mathematics and are linked to NJ Graduation Requirements.
