Q & A with Coach Salton

“Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” ~ Vince Lombardi

When are try-outs?

Try-outs are always held the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.

What must I bring to try-outs?

Your try-out jersey (you will receive one at the mandatory meeting held a few days before Thanksgiving), shorts, basketball shoes, and ENERGY!!! Please do not bring any valuables to try-outs. Jewelry is not to be worn during any try-outs, practices, and/or games.

What must I do before I can try-out?

You must pick up sign-up materials from Coach Salton in gym 5~6 in September/October, you must get a physical to be cleared to participate, AND you must attend the mandatory meeting (held the week of Thanksgiving).

Do I need to get another physical if I had one in the Summer before school or if I had one for a Fall sport?

No, but you still need to complete the "Health History Update" and "Athletic Parental Consent" forms and hand them into the NURSE so you can be cleared.

How often should I check the website?

Off-season: Once a week

In-season: Twice a week

What time are practices?

If you make one of our teams, you will be given a practice schedule in advance. We alternate early and late practices with our girl's basketball team. Early practices will typically run from 2:30-4:30. Late practices will typically run from 4:30-6:45.

Are there Saturday practices?

YES

What is the practice policy?

Players MUST attend all practices unless there is an emergency. PLAYERS ARE NOT ALLOWED to miss practice for doctors, parties, trips, vacations, and any other non-emergency. Players must communicate all potential conflicts well in advance. If you are not at practice the day before a game, you are not allowed to play in that game.

How many games do we play?

Varsity will play between 22-26 games a season. JV and Freshmen will typically have a 18-20 game schedule.

What is the typical GAME DAY schedule like?

Freshmen - 3:45 pm

JV - 5:15 pm

Varsity - 7:00 pm

Are the freshman and JV players expected to be at the Varsity Home games?

What type of training is my son expected to do in the off-season?

Watchung Hills recently opened a great weight room, which is run by our Strength & Conditioning coach, Bob Coglianese. Members on the team should be training with Coach Coglianese at least three times a week in the off-season if they are not involved with another sport at the time.

HOURS: 2:30 - 4:00

WHERE: gym 4 (near Tennis Courts)

SUMMER HOURS: TBA

During the season, our entire program will be training 1-2 times a week with Coach Coaglianese in addition to our practices.

Yes, our teams compete in the Linden Varsity Summer and the Hillsborough JV Summer Leagues. During the Fall, we play in the Edison Shooting Academy Fall League (TBSA) on Sundays.

Can anyone be a member of one of these off-season leagues?

No, you must be a returning Watchung Hills basketball player AND selected by the WH coaching staff.
