Some Thoughts on Differentiated Instruction
All schools, and in fact all teachers, are driven by a moral obligation to advance their student's understanding of the world around them so that they can reach their fullest potential. However, no two students are exactly the same! I’m sure that each student learned to count, tie their shoes, spell their name, and almost every other conceivable skill at a different age. I know that some students love to draw, and others express themselves better through writing. There are even those who express themselves best on the football field, track, or softball diamond. We are all different!
But yet, despite those differences, each student does express themself in some way. Every student can count, tie their shoes, and spell their name. Perhaps, its not when we learned something, nor how we learned it, but rather that we did learn it! It's human nature to learn things differently than our neighbor, even though we both learn it in the end!
Why should physics and engineering be any different? This year, in an effort to help all students learn, I am going to differentiate instruction. For more on this teaching strategy, see the following link:
