The WHRHS Health Service Department provides an environment that promotes the well-being, academic success and lifelong achievement of our students. As school nurses we strive to facilitate positive student responses to normal development, promote health and safety and intervene daily with actual and potential mental and physical health issues. The WHRHS health services program is designed to promote child and adolescent health and reduce health-related risk behaviors. The program consist of school nurses and the school physician Dr. Marc Silberman. (908-647-6464)
We would like to inform you of the health office requirements and assist with any health care needs your student may have during their years at the Hills. Our office is located in the South building, across from Gym 7/8 and next to the South Cafeteria. The office is opened daily from 7:30AM--3:30PM.
SERVICES PROVIDED BY SCHOOL NURSES
HEALTH SERVICES: Assess health and development, provides nursing interventions, and evaluates students' responses to care.
HEALTH EDUCATION: Provides health education to students, staff and parents.
HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT: Identifies health and safety concerns in the school environment.
NUTRITIONAL SERVICES: Supports healthy food services programs.
COUNSELING/MENTAL HEALTH: Assesses needs, provides interventions and refers students to appropriate staff or community agencies.
STAFF WELLNESS: Provides health education, training and wellness programs to school staff.

Freshmen & Transfer Students
The Watchung Hills Regional High School Board of Education requires a physical examination for all ninth grade and transfer students. The exam must be dated within one year of entry into school and must be documented on the WHRHS Student Physical Form. A current immunization record should be submitted with the physical exam. Forms are available on this website or may be picked up at the Health Office.

STUDENTS MAY NOT START SCHOOL UNTIL PHYSICALS & IMMUNIZATION RECORDS HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED
Illness & Injury
Your child will be cared for by a certified school nurse for illness, injury or health related issues. In the case of serious injury or illness, the parents/guardians will be notified immediately. If parents/guardians cannot be reached, designated emergency contacts will be notified to transport the student for medical follow-up or home. If the need for an ambulance/emergency care presents, the student will be transported via ambulance to the nearest available Emergency Room. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that you complete the EMERGENCY CONTACT CARD (located in the Student Packet at the beginning of the school year) in its entirety to assure us reaching you for emergency situations. Please contact us via email or phone during the school year if any demographic information changes for your family.
State law does not permit students to carry prescription or over the counter medication while at school with the exception of those with a potentially life threatening illness ( Asthmatics/Inhalers, Severe Allergies/Epipen, Diabetics/Insulin/Glucagon) . If your student should require medication during the school day he/she must report to the health office for any medication to be dispensed. Please note: No Medications will be given if the Emergency Contact Card is not completed and signed. If your student requires daily prescription medication State law requires the following: A written prescription signed by your health care provider including diagnosis, medication dosgage, route and time of administration ,and written consent of the parent/guardian. The medication must be presented to the health office at the beginning of the year by the parent/guardian in the original container. Forms are available in the health office and on line at the health office Website under forms.
All students will be screened for Height, Weight, and Blood Pressure. 10th Grade students will be screened for vision, 11th Grade students will be screened for hearing. Scoliosis screening will be done biannually on all students per parental consent. Screenings may be requested by teachers, parents, or students if there is a health concern. A referral letter will be sent home for further medical evaluation on any screenings that fall outside normal parameters.
Please refer to the Athletic Website for further information and forms for those students choosing to participate in athletic events as there are specific requirements per the state. Please note the Sports Physical must be recorded by your physician on the WHRHS Annual Physical Examination Form ( Part A & B) and be dated within 365 days of the first day of practice. It must be completed and signed in its entirety by the physician, parent/guardian, and student athlete. This includes Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Pulse and Vision. If your child wears prescription eyewear remember to bring it with you on the day of your exam. Additionally, those students with a current Sports Physical MUST complete a Health History Update Packet for each sport they participate in within that school year. This packet MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE HEALTH OFFICE WITHIN 60 DAYS OF THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE. ALL QUESTIONS MUST BE ANSWERED AND ALL FORMS SIGNED BY THE PARENT/GUARDIAN AND STUDENT/ATHLETE.

The WHRHS Board of Education has purchased insurance coverage to protect all students against accidental injury. Coverage is provided for all school sponsored and supervised activities. If your student is injured please notify the Coach, Athletic Trainer or Administrator responsible for the event to ensure an Incident/Accident Report is completed and submitted to the health office. Please note you must submit your primary insurance coverage first, save all EOB's and request school insurance forms from the health office for further payment by the school insurance.
