Project Lead The Way

Project Lead The Way is a comprehensive pre-engineering program that focuses on the application of math and science to solve real world technological problems. Our program requires students to apply skills across the curriculum to design and develop practical solutions and present those solutions to their peers through various methods. These students have an opportunity to obtain college credit by earning an 85% average in the course and passing the college level exam provided by the Rochester Institute of Technology. The goal is to develop well rounded individuals who can move forward beyond high school with the skills and knowledge to enter an engineering program in college and problem solve for life.

Students can earn college credit for specific PLTW Courses!

Courses offered at Watchung Hills Regional High School:

Introduction to Engineering Design (IED)
Available to any student
College Credit Available

Windows Media / Quick Time

Designed for 9th or 10th grade students, the major focus of IED is the design process and its application. Through hands-on projects, students apply engineering standards and document their work. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to help them design solutions to solve blocksproposed problems, document their work using an engineer’s notebook, and communicate solutions to peers and members of the professional community.

Principles of Engineering (POE)

Available to students who already took Introduction to Engineering Design
College Credit Available
Windows Media / Quick Time

Designed for 10th or 11th grade students, this survey course exposes students to major concepts they’ll encounter in a post-secondary engineering course of study. Topics include mechanisms, energy, statics, materials, and kinematics. They develop problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges, document their work and communicate solutions.

Digital Electronics (DE)
Available to any student
College Credit Available
Digital electronics is the foundation of all modern electronic devices such as mobile phones, MP3 players, laptop computers, digital cameras and high-definition televisions. Students are introduced to the process of combinational and sequential logic design, engineering standards and technical documentation. This course is designed for 10th 11th, or 12th grade students.

Courses in Arch
CAD Architecture I -Residential Architecture
Application of Autodesk AutoCAD
Available to all students
Windows Media / Quick Time
CAD Architecture covers the specialized application of AutoCAD for architectural design and drawing, including floor plans, elevations, and pictorial drawings. Scale models are Hayleyalso created.

Civil Engineering
Architecture (CEA)
Application of Autodesk Revit Architecture
Available to any student who took CAD Architecture I.
College Credit Available
Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3D architecture design software. Some students have seen these designs come to life through partnerships with local housing organizations.
