The teachers of the science department at WHRHS are dedicated to instructing students in various core science subject as well as science and technology electives. We offer traditional classes in biology, chemistry and physics, for students of a wide-range of interests in science. Electives in Ecology, Marine Science, Human Biology, Forensic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry add to the robust core curriculum students receive at WHRHS. Our Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering Program allows students to step outside traditional science classes and into the realm of technology based engineering.
Science courses at WHRHS are based on the Next Generation of Science Standards (NGSS
) which allow for teachers to develop a curricular framework that is not only rich in content but also in the practice of inquiry-based science. To this end, teachers are involved in creating a dynamic curriculum via a team based approach rather than individual approach. This team based approach allows for a broader thought process and the sharing of ideas and materials that expand to all students.
When students take Biology at WHRHS they are required to sit for the the New Jersey Biology Competency Test or NJBCT
. All New Jersey public high school students, regardless of grade level, who are enrolled in a Biology course or content equivalent during the school year must take the test, regardless of prior testing exposure and experience.
