WRITING ASSIGNMENT TO COMPLETE BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL:
Complete the questions below:
1. Why is the Socratic method an excellent way to learn?
2. What is Mother Culture, according to Ishmael?
3. What are the messages described by Ishmael and the student? Are the messages consistent with those shown in American culture at present? Pick a few examples from contemporary society.
4. Are there any perceived messages in our society that counter or challenge Ishmael's interpretation of Mother Culture?
5. What is the significance of the jellyfish story?
6. Who are the leavers? Who are the takers? Discuss three or four important differences between them. Evaluate man's interaction with the environment as dicussed in the book.
7. Select a word, phrase or concept that you feel is important in Ishmael and develop a discussion question for the class.
8. You are a politican transformed by Ishmael -- what laws would you enact to turn things around in society today?
ASSESSMENT:
There will be a scored discussion in class during the first week of school. The following criteria are used to evaluate the discussion:
* using specific data/quotes while responding to the topic
* strength of articulation
* refocusing/redirecting the conversation
* asking challenging questions
* sharing a brand new (relevant) idea to advance the conversation
Afterwards, you will be assigned a timed response essay on one of the main themes of the book. These themes relate directly to the Essential Questions of the World Cultures curriculum.
